Follow a day’s journey from village bakeries and homemade wines to Bodbe Monastery and the streets of Sighnaghi and Telavi. The Alazani Valley provides the backdrop to stories of Kakhetian history, people and wine traditions.
A first taste of Kakheti
Leaving central Tbilisi, we head to Badiauri for roughly 30 minutes at a bakery: watch shoti being made and taste the bread with cheese. A further 35–40 minutes in Manavi introduces you to homemade wine and churchkhela.
Bodbe and Sighnaghi
At Bodbe Monastery, we discuss Saint Nino, who is buried here, and the arrival of Christianity in Georgia. In Sighnaghi, explore streets lined with wooden balconies and walk the fortifications overlooking the Alazani Valley.
Telavi and its wine cellar
In Telavi, see Erekle II’s palace and a plane tree around 1,000 years old, with stories connected to the film Mimino. A sommelier explains local winemaking methods during a cellar tasting featuring 8 varieties of wine and chacha. Along the way, your guide shares Kakheti’s history and everyday traditions.
An additional walk, on us
