Northern Kakheti unfolds through fortresses, monastery complexes and family winemaking. Visit a royal residence, look across the Alazani Valley and learn how clay qvevri vessels connect with local traditions.
Ujarma and the two Shuamta monasteries
From Ujarma’s hilltop ruins, look across the Iori Valley and mountains and discuss the fortress’s strategic role. In the forest, explore Old Shuamta’s 5th–7th-century churches and New Shuamta, associated with Queen Tinatin.
Telavi and a family winery
In Telavi, see the plane tree over 900 years old and Mimino filming locations, then have lunch in a Georgian restaurant. At the Skhneki family winery, taste several wines and learn about underground qvevri and the differences between local and European methods.
Batonistsikhe, Gremi and Alaverdi
At Erekle II’s residence, explore royal rooms, archaeological exhibits and historical weapons. In Gremi, see the Archangels’ Church, tower and walls of the former capital, with views over the Alazani Valley. The 11th-century Alaverdi Cathedral completes the visits, with stories about its religious role and connection to wine.
