Explore two contrasting sides of Kakheti: the dry steppe around David Gareja and the green landscapes near Sighnaghi. Cave churches and a hillside walk are paired with a farmer visit, Bodbe Monastery and a wine tasting.
Across the steppe to the monasteries
We travel east towards the Azerbaijani border, passing seasonally changing steppe, sculpted hills, a salt lake and views of the Caucasus. Photo stops are made at selected points along the road.
David Gareja and the cave churches
We view the 6th-century Lavra of Saint David from outside, as it remains an active monastery. Visit the Transfiguration Church, which holds Saint David’s relics, and the Natlismtsemeli cave church. A walk along the hillside reveals the rainbow mountains and the caves of Tetri Udabno with medieval paintings.
From Mzisguli to Bodbe
Farmers in Mzisguli introduce us to churchkhela, fruit leather and homemade Rkatsiteli, Saperavi and Kindzmarauli wines. Bodbe is a place to learn about Saint Nino and Christianity’s spread through Georgia.
Sighnaghi: a walk and a tasting
In Sighnaghi, walk streets with wooden balconies and explore the old fortifications. A traditional cellar introduces Georgian winemaking, with a history stretching back 8,000 years, followed by a tasting. Lunch is planned at a restaurant looking across the Alazani Valley towards the Caucasus.
