Follow the old caravan route towards Mount Kazbek on a drive along the Georgian Military Highway. Reservoir, fortress and mountain-church stops are accompanied by stories about the region, local traditions and the legend of Prometheus.
Zhinvali and Ananuri
Spend around 20 minutes at Zhinvali Reservoir, set between three ranges and supplying water to Tbilisi. The next 45 minutes at Ananuri focus on the Aragvi princes, the fortress buildings and the Last Judgement fresco.
The Friendship Monument and Gergeti
A 45-minute stop at Gudauri’s Friendship Monument offers canyon views and its historical background. Another approximately 45 minutes at Gergeti Trinity Church introduces Mount Kazbek, the church and the hall where local elders assembled.
The Rooms terrace
Allow around 1.5 hours at the café of Rooms Hotel in Kazbegi. Enjoy coffee on the terrace with views of Gergeti, Trinity Church and the town.
